DRESS HOOK

Unique ID: IOW-6175F1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Cast copper alloy (cast in one piece) dress hook, length 23.8mm, width 13mm and about 1mm thick. Weight 1.24g. A rectangular slot for attachment with a face that has convex sides. Curvilinear and symmetrical open-work on the face is formed by two circular "lobes", one each side at the position where the attachment slot joins the face. Each lobe has an irregular central depression and it is possible that, when cast, the lobes were intended to be perforated for sewing holes. A central cusp at the base of the face provides further curving form. Below the face are two transverse moulded and bevelled ribs, The upper rib which extends beyond the width of the face is 12mm in length and the lower rib which blends with the hook is about 6mm in length. The hook is D-shaped in section, flat at the rear and the tip is missing. The break on the hook appears to be old.
