STRAP END

Object type certainty: Certain

A nearly complete Early Medieval cast copper alloy strap-end of Thomas' Class B Type 1 (c.750-1050 AD).

The strap-end consists of a sub-triangular split plate end held together with two circular rivets tapering into an incomplete strap terminal end with one circular iron rivet.

The flat-ended wedge shaped split end and shaft are plain, save for a series of two transverse grooves at the middle and three similar grooves just above the terminal, and single incised lines either side of the split end. No traces of niello survive. The lowest groove is obscured by corrosion from a single iron rivet. The split end measures 10.3 mm wide and 3.7 mm thick. A very small portion of the split end is missing. There are two intact copper alloy circular rivets, each measuring approximately 2.4 mm in diameter; the rivets connect both plates of the split end and would have held the leather strap in place. The strap end has an even green patina. The incomplete terminal end measures 6.3 mm wide and 2.6 mm thick. The strap-end is similar to zoomorphic types but unfortunately is missing decoration on the terminal end that would confirm this. Overall the strap end measures 42.0 mm long, 10.3 mm wide (split end), 6.3 mm wide (terminal end) and weighs 4.5 grams.

Thomas comments that this type was introduced in the latter 8th or early 9th century and remained popular until the 11th. It is widely distributed in southern and south-east England and much less frequently north of The Wash. For a similar example, cf. Thomas, Finds Research Group, Datasheet 32, Fig. 2, No. 13.
