A modern reproduction of a double patard of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgandy. The model would have dated from circa 1467-1474. The original obverse would have shown the Arms of Burgandy and the legend KAROLVS DEI GRA DVX BVRG CO FLA. The original reverse would have comprised of a arcuate cross fleurry with a mint mark at the centre and the legend SIT nOmEN DOmINI BENEDICTVm. An example of the original is recorded under reference LVPL-674702.
The reproduction is complete and comprises of a copper alloy flan which has been silvered. It is immediately recognisable as a copy due to both sides being stamped with the arcuate cross fleurry. The reproduction is also noticeably thicker than the model. The legend (which is the same on both sides) reads SIT nOmEN BIgBURI BENEDICTVm AN.
Bigbury mint is a contemporary medal company which also produces a selection of 'Heritage Gifts' including reproduction coins from various periods. All of the reproduction coins refer to 'BIgBURI' in the legend. In Bigbury reproductions, the 'g' is represented by a characteristic swirl and the initial mark comprises of a 'T' superimposed with an 'O'.
The reproduction was found in a public park which may have previously hosted a re-enactment activity or history stall.
