A worn and corroded copper alloy medieval English Jetton. 'Star and Crescent/Cross' design type. Obverse design is a six pointed star with crescent moon within a border of repeated IO although this can not be clearly seen. Reverse design, is a long three stranded cross with trefoil terminals to the arms and three pellets in each quarter and a border of repeated IO (again not clear). This Jetton has been pierced centrally. Measures, D 21.74mm and weighs 2.3g.
Reference; Mernick and Algar (2001) illustrate three jettons with a similar obverse (page 220). They suggest the star and moon device was a badge of the Plantagenet kings and that it was first produced c. 1325 but continued in use for some while with a variety of reverse types.
