A fragment of an Early Medieval mount from the apex disc on an Anglo-Saxon shield boss, dating from the 6th century. The fragment is a flat piece of copper alloy with one edge which looks to be almost complete and which is curved. The other edges are breaks and are patinated. The front face is decorated with Salin Style I. There is a double incised line border along the curved edge, then an inner border of ropework like design. The main field is filled with a clearly defined animal leg, several bands of triple stranded ornament and other elements which are less clear. Interrupting the border is part of a circular motif, perhaps a setting which is now empty. Kevin Leahy notes that he has seen a similar mount from Lincolnshire which had three settings round the edge. The decoration is in relief and is gilded. The reverse is plain and there is no evidence of attachment. The ungilded metal has a dark brown patina with small areas of green corrosion. The diameter of the mount would have been about 50mm. Compare NMS-F2E0E7 and BH-E649E3.
