A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon sleeve clasp dating to the 6th century AD. The clasp is of Hines form B18b (Hines, 1993, p59).

The clasp is the 'catch-piece', having an incomplete small integral rearward hook on the underside. The object is sub-rectangular in plan. The bar is decorated with five deep transverse groves interspersed with smaller grooves. In the centre of the bar is a projecting rectangular tab on the rear of which is the hook. The clasp has four conjoined roundels along the rear edge. Each roundel is decorated with a stamped cross. The remains of gilding lie within each cross, between each roundel and within most of the grooves. The rear of the object is undecorated and has a dark brown patina. A similar example which can be found on the database is Daubney, A (2009) LIN-706D63 A EARLY MEDIEVAL SLEEVE CLASP Webpage available at: http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/245754.

Hines describes Form 18 clasps as 'a set of relatively elaborately designed Class B clasps, the richness of which relative to most other members of the class is reflected by the fact that many of these examples are gilt, and some are silver plated or carry Style 1 ornament.' (Hines p59).
