SPOON

Unique ID: CORN-8CBC91

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast pewter handle from a large spoon, with a rounded terminal and plain upper face and a tapering mid rib on the back of the handle. On the back of the stem are four stamps within separate oblong reserves, one reads 'THOMAS' and next to it the 'Y' of 'YATES', and on the other side of the mid-rib, the words 'STEEL' and then 'WIRE'. Thomas Yates was a pewterer between 1849 and 1882, based in Birmingham, which was a centre for the production of pewter during the 19th century. With the pewter trade declining in vessels, the pewterers had to be resourceful and exploit new opportunities, producing pub mugs and measures, beer machines and bar fittings, and blanks for electro-plated wares after 1840. This spoon is of 19th-century character, replaced slender grace with heft. There are lumps of iron corrosion product down the centre of the back of the spoon, which represent the remains of the steel wire that was inserted into the handle for strength, and forms the pronounced ridge at the back.
