An almost complete lead alloy biconical steelyard weight, dating to the Roman period. The weight has the iron suspension loop intact at the apex of the weigh, and the remains of the opposing end of the iron rod at its base. This is one of three weights found in close proximity. The Roman standard of weight was the libra or pound which weighed about 327gms, and which was split into 12 parts called unicae or ounces, each of 27 grams. This steelyard weighs 280.5gms, or almost 10.5 Roman ounces. See also BERK-E45915 & BERK-E49761.
