BROOCH

Unique ID: IOW-BC8D13

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Incomplete cast copper alloy bow brooch. Part of the bow, one wing and the left side of the spring mechanism survives. Pin and catch-plate missing. Estimated width at the wings is 24mm. All the breaks appear to be old. When complete the spring would have had 10 coils. The slender bow is largely D-shaped in cross-section. However, a median rib on the front of the bow enlarges as it extends upwards and develops into a rearward lug with two perforations to take the axis bar and the forward projecting chord. The wing, which is only 8mm in length from the edge of the bow, is modestly convex at the front and concave at the rear. A moulded vertical groove is situated very close to the outer edge of the wing. For other Colchester two-piece brooches of this type see Hattatt 1989.
