This copper alloy object would have formed part of a chafing dish handle. These were used to heat food by placing dishes on charcoal or hot water contained in the chafing dish. It is 85mm long, 8mm wide and square in profile for one third of its length and 12-14mm wide and flat for the remainder. The lower, square section has one rivet hole with rivet intact in the centre, 10mm in. This would have fastened it to the side of the dish. The central section starts to flatten out and curve 45 degrees to the right becoming 12mm wide; At two thirds of its length, the object turns back on itself forming a zig zag. This section is also curved and slightly wider at 14mm. The upper half of it is in the shape of a human head in profile, with hairline, eye and collar? incised onto the surface. Below the 'neck' of this person, is a further rivet hole which would have fixed a hinged swinging 'arm' these would have functioned as the handles used to move the dishes to table.
