CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: IOW-BB56E3

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

Cast lead cloth seal. Disc 2 and disc 3 of a four disc seal. Both discs are about 12mm in diameter with an integral folded attachment lug, about 3mm in length and 3mm in width. Disc 2. This side is very worn but has been identified by Geoff Egan as being a "OF ENG LAND" Charles II type head seal (possibly James II). A beaded circlet enclosing the head is just discernable. Disc 3. Enclosed within a beaded circlet is a lion passant guardant. 1/2 is visible below the lion. This is likely to be a 3 1/2 pence for cloth subsidy seal (the 3 having been worn and not now clearly visible.

Notes:

A similar seal has been published by Egan, G in Saunders,P. 2001. For further informatin on cloth seals see. Egan, G. 1985 and Egan, G. 1994.
