CLOTH SEAL

Unique ID: LIN-52BC58

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A post-medieval lead cloth seal. The seal is rectangular and has two stubs on the reverse. The front is decorated with two lines of Roman numerals, and a third line below of Latin letters which are upside down.

The lines read: [ ]VIII/XXII/(upside down)A???

This seal dates to the late sixteenth or seventeenth century. Egan (1995) describes these as "a distinct series of proforma seals, cast with standard specifications for different kinds of cloth and with a space next to these for an alnager's or searcher's stamp, to confirm that from examination the textile was indeed as the regulations required" (Egan 1995: 58).
