UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: HAMP-51ABA2

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete and undatable copper alloy unidentified object, consisting of a rectangular plate (14.27x17.22mm) from one edge of which extends an arched arm, expanding into something flatter at its other end, although only a tiny fragment of this survives. At this point to the reverse however is a curving hook, in the same plane as the arm, but curving first backwards then forwards again. The tip is worn and it is uncertain if it is a break or not. Behind the plate, just before the arm extends, is a rectangular projection extending at right angles and broken at its end, possibly across a piercing as the break is slightly dished.

The object has a slightly pitted green patina and two opposing edges of the rectangular plate are rather jagged (though worn) or perhaps unfinished. Where one edge has an off-centre triangular projection, just behind it is an incised vertical line, otherwise comprising the edge of the object.

The object measures 26.21mm in length, is 17.22mm in max.width and 10.76mm in max.depth. It weighs 3.74g.

Although at first glance the object resembles a small-long brooch with square head, unpierced pin bar lug on the reverse, narrow bow and missing foot but with a fragment of catchplate on the reverse, Kevin Leahy comments: 'I don't like this as a brooch particularly with the odd fitting on the end of the 'bow'. I am wondering if it could be part of a candle wick trimmer but I confess I am not sure how it would work' (pers. comm. 2013). Other suggestions are that it could be part of a lock mechanism. The patination and general feel of the object suggests a date in the Roman to Medieval period.
