Unique ID: SF-929861

Object type certainty: Certain

A complete copper-alloy annular early Anglo-Saxon brooch frame, now in two halves due to an old break, both of these halves survive, fit together and will be recorded together. This circular annular brooch is c54.81mm in external diameter, c35.15mm in internal diameter, and the width of the frame is c10.17mm. The pin hole can be seen, it is oval in shape, measuring 5.10mm by 3.18mm in size, within it there is corroded iron, probably the remains of the now missing iron pin. There are traces of corroded iron directly opposite the pin hole, which must have been where the missing pin used to rest. The front face of this brooch frame is decorated with two rows of small circular indentaions, one row near to the inner edge of the frame and one near to the outer edge. The back face is not decorated. Patches of powdery green active corrosion can be seen on both faces. A very similar annular brooch, of the same size and with indented circular decoration, has been found at Icklingham, Suffolk (West 1998, 169, fig 52, no 2).
