SEAL MATRIX

A complete copper-alloy seal matrix in very good condition. It is pointed oval in shape, measuring 32.45mm in length and 21.33mm in width. On the back face there is a circular suspension loop at one tip of the oval, a central ridge projects vertically from this and runs the lenght of the matrix, this has been filed down. In the centre of the front face a pelican which is feeding its young with blood from a wound in its breast can be seen. This is religious symbolism for the self sacrifice of Jesus, who died to save mankind. The border inscription reads, 'S'SIMONIS: SIRE' meaning 'Seal of Simon Sire.' This seal matrix is most likely to be 14th century in date.
