Lead Alloy, possibly painted, probable toy fragment. Fragment from a cast tubular object of externally angular form, possibly originally octagonal. Two flat surfaces with a shallow gutter are represented: one bears a pair of bosses with a longitudinal mould line running through their centres, and the other bears the letters S G ?N, possibly reserved from a painted surface of uncertain hue. It is suggested this may be a small fragment from the barrel of a toy pistol. These initially followed the form of contemporary firearms, but subsequently perhaps lagging behind the times, and some probably being provided with a firing mechanism using black powder - though this might be for effect rather than its projectile power. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1800.
