A cast copper alloy finger ring dating to the late Medieval period, 16th century. The object has an oval hoop which is D-shaped in cross-section. The bezel is oval and engraved with an image of the Pelican in her Piety facing right with her wing outstretched plucking her breast to feed her chick.
The image of the pelican was used as a symbol for Christ's suffering, since it was believed that the bird nourished her young with her own blood. (Some orphanages in 15th century Bruge have this image as their symbol).
