A Medieval to Post-Medieval (1450-1800) sheet copper-alloy rivet missing part of its head. It stands 25.78mm high and weighs 1.44g. The shank narrows from 4.6mm in diameter to 2.5mm. The head measures 10.26x8.16mm.
The rivet is made from a kite-shaped piece of copper-alloy rolled into a cone. The top is flattened to form a head. The function for these objects is unclear but it is thought that they may have been used for repairing metal vessels.
Egan (2005, p.101) suggests that these were a later form a rivet, which took over from the Medieval folded staples in the late 15th to the mid to late 16th century and continued in use into the 18th century.
