DRESS HOOK

Unique ID: SOM-160CF5

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Post Medieval copper alloy hooked tag, now incomplete following an old break. The surviving object comprises a trapezoidal attachment loop at the top which expands into tri-lobed plate with openwork decoration, broadly triangular in cross-section. There are moulded rosettes at the junction of the loop and the plate on the front. The openwork creates a design of a series of three loops. The missing hook would have projected from the point of the triangle; it is now missing along with the base of the plate. The incomplete object is now 15.5mm long by 18.1mm wide and 2.2mm thick; it weighs 1.29g.

Read (2008, 110) illustrates similar examples, numbers 436-439, the decorative features on which he refers to as a Hungerford knot. He classifies them as Early post-medieval Class E, Type 5. Number 437 is dated to AD 1550-1600 from a secure Thames foreshore context.
