An incomplete machine pressed white metal clog clasp, of Late Post Medieval to Early Modern dating (c. AD 1790 to c. AD 1920).

Approximately 50% of the clasp is present, consisting of the lower half. The clog clasp is sub rectangular in plan, with endented sides. The lower hook has broken. The front has been decorated with an incised floral design, with a central stem, two leaves to either side, and a large flower head, probably a tulip. The reverse is plain and undecorated.

The clasp measures 14.11 mm in length, 16.89 mm wide and 1.41 mm thick. It weighs 0.7 g.

The clasp is a light to mid grey / off white colour, with an even surface patina. It probably has been made from tin or other similar white metal. The white patina is suggestive that the clog clasp may have been burnt prior to burial.

Between 1790 and 1810 some wooden-soled shoes were fastened with pairs of metal clasps. The same clasps were also worn on clogs from c.1850. First in the Lake District, before spreading to Lancashire and Yorkshire, being widely used in mill towns and the countryside. Textile mill girls normally wore traditional clog-clasps and they remained in use until the 1920's.
