A cast copper alloy hinged plate from a medieval two-piece strap-end. The plate consists of a single, narrow piece of plate metal folded to form a loop at the terminal end. A rivet hole is visible at the atatchment edge and the front of the plate has incised decoration, the form of which is hidden by corrosion and dirt. In common with other medieval gilded metals, traces of a red substrate are visible on this object, and flecks of gold leaf are visible when the object is viewed using a microscope. Pritchard and Egan describe similar examples in Dress Accessories 1150-1450, dating from the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Their function is unclear, but they postulate that these objects were a form of book fastening since many have been found in ecclesiastical contexts.
