A neck fragment of a stoneware vessel, probably a jug, with part of an applied, stylised, moustached and bearded face on it. The fragment comes from a type of stoneware vessel known as a Bartmann or Bellarmine jug, the applied face thought to be lampooning Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621), and dates from the post-medieval period (1600-1750). The outer surface is dark brown which has been salt-glazed, producing the mottled effect. The interior is a light grey in colour, glazed to a high gloss. The fabric is hard-fired and light grey.
