Post Medieval sword belt mount dating to the 16th century. The flat plate of the mount has a tri-lobed end with a narrowed waist underneath. This waist then expands forming rounded shoulders before tapering in width to a second waist that expands out on each side with rounded knops creating a transverse oval shape. Below the oval starts the circular sectioned hook which extends downwards before curving towards the front of the plate and ends in a rounded knop. A irregular copper alloy ring still hangs from the hook. The front of the mount has raised, cast floriate decoration in a design known as 'vine-scroll'. There are two iron rivets still present in the plate, both in the centre; one at the tri-lobed end and one towards the hook. It measures 49.9mm long excluding the ring, 21.3mm wide, 2.4mm thick (11.4mm thick including the hook) and weighs 9.29g.
This is one of usually three fittings that together with a upper plate (from which comes the ring on this example) formed a hanging arrangement for a sword. Read (2008: 220, No.793) illustrates a complete example of such a hanger which he dates to the 16th century AD and there are several others on this database including SOM-EF4646.
