A cast copper alloy single loop buckle complete with buckle plate, pin and rivets, dating from the medieval period (c. 1250-1450). The buckle frame is D-shaped, with a narrowed strap bar and seperately cast grooved copper alloy pin. The buckle plate is still partially attached to the strap bar, and has five attachment rivet holes with three copper alloy rivets still in situ. The plate is decorated with two incised rectangles and there are traces of the gilding which covered the plate remaining within the incised areas and around one of the rivet holes. Ross Whitehead illustrates a similar, ungilded example in 'Buckles 1250-1800', p. 19.
