BROOCH

Unique ID: WMID-711684

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative (Dolphin) of Roman date (AD 43 to AD 65).

Approximately 75% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, bow and wings. Part of the catch-plate is present at the base of the bow, but the pin and spring are missing, presumably lost in antiquity.

The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile. The bow is sub circular in cross section. It extends to a broken point near the foot. Part of the catch-plate is present as a low ridge on the back of the bow. The wings project from the sides of the head. The end caps are missing. The back of the bow demonstrates a sub rectangular depression, which extends the entire width of the brooch (from one wing to the other), and would have originally held the spring. The back of the bow is smooth.

The brooch measures 52.54 mm length, is 24.69 mm wide across wings and 14.76 mm thick. It weighs 9.9 grams.

The brooch is a mid greenish colour with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

Similar brooches can be seen in Richard Hattatt's Visual Guide to Ancient brooches (p 298, fig 157, no. 356) and are of 1st Century AD dating.
