A complete cast and decorated lead alloy tobacco box lid knop of Post Medieval dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD).

The knop is broadly sub oval in plan and irregular in profile. The central knop / lid has a central circular knop, surrounded by a oval plate, with a raised external border. Traces of black enamel are still present on the surface. The neck below the knop of the lid becomes narrow before expanding outwards in a slanting platform with the remains of the rivet protruding out from underneath.

It measures 23.35 mm in height, 30.22 mm long and 20.05 mm wide. It weighs 23.4 g.

The tobacco jar lid knop is a dark grey colour, with an even surface patina.

Similar examples are illustrated in G Bailey's 'Finds identified', 2000, page 62, which he dates to the middle of the 17th century and states that the lead boxes were used to keep moist tobacco inside. It is likely that this form of tobacco jar is popular into the late 18th century.
