A gold posy ring, now slightly distorted. Externally the band is plain.Inscribed on the interior band: A frenes' gift
The inscription is followed by a maker's mark: WG in an oval. This mark has not been identified, the maker is unidentifiable from those listed by Grimwade and Jackson and there are no examples of this mark in the British Museum collections.
There are examples of this inscription, or variants of, in the British Museum collections, see for example AF.1190 with the inscription A true Friends gift, with the makers mark of black letter WG in a rectangular mark (different to the WG mark on 2012 T845), dated to 17th - 18th century.
In the absence of a datable maker's mark this ring cannot be securely dated to pre 1712 and as such falls outside the remit of the Treasure Act 1996.
