Cast copper alloy cast swivel fitting fragment, probably medieval in date (c AD1100-1300). The object consists of one end of a swivel which would have attached to the other section by a connecting pin. The body of the swivel is globular and is joined by the two ends of the swivel loop, which is incomplete. Both sides of the loop has a small perforation hole with a raised edge. The flattened end of the globular body has a grooved teeth-marked collar. The underside of the swivel is hollow to accommodate the central pin. The object has a mid green patina.
The exact function of such pieces is uncertain, but it is suggested that they may have formed part of a chain for suspending cooking pots, or as a lead for animals (G. Egan; 1998; pp. 296).
