Probable late Iron Age to early Roman iron and copper alloy linch pin head that is heavily corroded and concreted. It is angled correctly and the disc visible on the object is where it would be expected to be for a linch pin of the period (for example see LANCUM-E78098). Dates to between c100BC and cAD100.
The object measures 27 x 17 x 13mm and weighs 6.4g.
Notes:
Found by the Pendle Heritage Centre Archaeolgy Group during excavation of a medieval bloomery. A large quantity of slag has been found but very little cultural material.
An amount of worked chert and medieval pottery was recovered, suggesting continuous occupation of the site from at least the Bronze Age.
