Early Medieval copper alloy Cross potent small long brooch dating to 6th century. The object is 60mm in length and 28mm wide. The pin is missing and the catchplate is slightly damaged. The brooch has been broken in two about half way down, towards the bottom of bow and is held in place by a modern repair. The brooch has a rectangular head plate which has incised lines running parallel to its edge. It has a trilobed cut out in each top corner, about 10mm deep. The lower half has bilobed cut outs at either side of the bow, 4mm deep. The three straight edges have a semicircular cut out in their centres about 2mm deep which touches the parallel line. The brooch has nicked edges on either side of the upper semicircular cut out and above those on each side. The bow has a ridge running down it which forms a triangular section at the top, this is flanked by two horizontal incised lines above and below. The foot of the brooch has a similar design, though in this case the area between the lines simply has a chamferred edge. The brooch terminates in a sub triangular flared foot, which has two horizontal incised lines across the widest part. below these has one more semicircular cut out flanked by nicks. The brooch is similar to 8B in E. A. Leeds 'The distribution of Angles and Saxons archaeologically considered' Archaeologia Vol 9 1945.
