An incomplete post-Medieval cast lead four part Charles II or James II alnage cloth seal (1662-c. 1701).
Disc 2 and disc 3 survive and are joined by a misshapen integral connecting strip.
Disc 2: OF ENG/LAND; Charles II type bust facing left
Disc 3: Fleur-de-lis with 1 to left and ½ to right
The seal is in poor condition and the majority of the surfaces have a buff patina.
Height: 19.62mm; width: 14.31mm; thickness: 4.32mm. Weight: 2.79g.
Cloth seals with similar busts have been published in Egan 1995: British Occasional Paper 93, 'Lead Cloth Seal and Related Items in the British Museum', pages 62-63 & 178, fig. 27.
A similar cloth seal from Salisbury, with thee fleurs-de-lis, has been published (Saunders 2001: 62, fig. 23, ref: 100).
Cloth seals were in use between the 13th and 19th centuries and were part of a system of industrial regulation and quality control which became very complicated, particularly in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (Egan, 1995, page 1).
