Fragment of an enamelled cast copper alloy mount with a trefoil terminal and bifid sides. The terminal contains raised foliate decoration in the form of two leaves and a central fleur from a stem flanked by scrolls and bifid leaves within the semi-circular side knops leading to the broken neck. The mount may have had an attachment point beyond the break but there are no rivet holes on this broken piece. Without any attachment at the terminal, the mount does not appear to be a sword belt fitting, but is more likely a furniture escutcheon or keyhole cover. There are areas of red enamel, now darkened to brown, which are in the recessed areas behind the foliate decoration to make it stand out even more. There are also traces on the back of a layer of black material, possibly lacquer.
Williams (1996) illustrates a strap end with similar decoration on page 180, Fig.12, No.92, which is dated from the 18th century.
Bailey (1993) illustrates escutcheons with similar decoration on pages 16 & 20, Nos.8, 13 & 48, which are dated from the 18th century.
Read (2001) illustrates mounts with similar foliate and scrolled decoration and bifid sides and trefoil terminals on pages 44 & 46, Figs.27 & 29, Nos.378 & 385, which are dated from the 18th century.
