A cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. The head has no wings and in plan is a vertical oval; it is decorated with a feint high-relief elongated comma on either side of the bow. The upper edge has traces of a incomplete perforated lug, presumably part of an integral headloop. On the reverse of the bow head there is a single vertical sub-oval integral lug with a circular off-centre perforation. The axis bar, spring, chord and pin are all missing. In profile the brooch is an inverted 'L' shape which has three moulded horizontal ribs of varying thickness and width as decoration at the top of the vertical portion of the bow. This moulding does not occur on the reverse of the bow, only the outer face. Below this decoration the bow tapers slightly and is sub-triangular in section and is decorated with a central vertical ridge and three pairs of high-relief lentoids either side of the centre. The bow terminates with a large bulbous knop/foot. The reverse of the lower portion of the bow has an incomplete solid catchplate. The brooch has a well developed matte light grey/green coloured patina. It weighs 13.2g, and measures 15.8mm wide and 56.61mm long.

The brooch is a Trumpet-headed type. Trumpet brooches date to the 1st to 2nd century (Bayley, J. and Butcher, S. 2004 Roman Brooches in Britain: A Technological and Typological Study based on the Richborough Collection Society of Antiquaries p. 160-164). Worrell (Worrell, S. 2007 'Roman Brooch Timeline' North-West PAS Newsletter) narrows down the date to 75 to 175 AD. A very similar brooch is illustrated in Hattat (Hattat, R. 1989 Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts Oxbow), No. 1529. Bayley, J. and Butcher, S. (ibid) also illustrates a similar brooch, T158A. Bayley, J. and Butcher, S. (ibid) further class trumpet brooches into four groups, A,B, C and D. The recorded brooch appears to fall into Group B, which dates to the second century.
