Copper alloy open type thimble or 'sewing ring' of late Medieval or early Post Medieval date. The sides are splayed and the base is wider than the top. The ring has fairly regularly spaced stamped oval pits arranged in four rows around the sides. There is no evidence of a makers mark but it is badly corroded. It is 19.4mm by 17.2mm at the base and 1.6mm thick; it weighs 4.0 grams.
The splayed sides allow an easier fit on the finger and is also chronologically diagnostic to the late Medieval or Post Medieval periods (Holmes 1988: 3). It is similar to Holmes (ibid) fig. 4 dated to c.1450-1550 AD.
