WEIGHT

Unique ID: HESH-50DB32

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Cast lead or lead alloy weight (possibly apothecaries' weight) of probable later Medieval or Post Medieval date (1350 - 1700). The weight is sub-rectangular in plan and profile; each edge is faceted / bevelled. The upper surface of the weight is decorated with seven cast raised pellets arranged symmetrically with two rows of three and a further pellet positioned centrally between them. The reverse face is relatively flat with a slight depression at the centre - this depression is corroded but it could contain a heart shaped stamp contained within a beaded border. The weight is a mid grey colour with a relatively even patina that covers all surfaces. A light active powdery corrosion product is present on some surfaces. A direct parallel for this weight has not been found; a similar square weight with five pellets can be seen in Biggs and Withers Lead weights page 29 cat no 66. There is not a date associated with this example but it is implied that it dates from the later medieval or post medieval periods.

The weight measures 18.9mm length 17.3mm width is 4.9mm thick and weighs 9.31 grams (1/3oz (0.33 ozs) / 144 grains)
