STRAP FITTING

Unique ID: NMS-3712D7

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete probably Middle Saxon to Late Saxon copper alloy buckle plate or strap fitting, one end broken: a strap or bar with rounded pierced terminal. Next to this is a triangular moulding next to a mask-like moulding. Beyond this is a rivet-hole followed by a bifurcation with grooved mouldings at both (probably broken) terminals. There is some resemblance to a buckle plate or strap fitting with zoomorphic decoration from Sedgeford (HER 51077), which is related to a group of 9th-century buckles with a wide distribution (H. Geake in Emery, P. EAA 120 (2007), 199, fig.5.90 SF 102; Rogers 1993, 1348, fig. 652 no. 5320). Length >32mm. Width 12mm. Max. thickness 3mm.
