A copper alloy Medieval book clasp of the pierced and hinged type (Howsam type A.1.1). It has a folded tapering rectangular plate which is hinged round a bar on a rounded element. There is a circular piercing in the centre of the rounded element. This would have fitted over a peg on the cover of the book. A zoomorphic pierced terminal projects from the end opposite the bar. The circular hole is at right angles to the plane of the rest of the book clasp. The rounded element is decorated with punched annulets at the bar end only, giving it the appearance of an acorn. The plate has a narrow border defined by incised lines, and the border is filled with diagonal hatching. The back plate is plain. There are two copper alloy rivets at the open end of the plate to attach the fitting to the strap. The metal has a very dark, almost black patina. Compare examples on page 154 of Egan and Pritchard.
