A cast copper alloy Post Medieval combination lock dating from 1550 to 1650 AD. The lock has a cylindrical case. The cylindrical case is made up five discs which are still articulated and movable on a copper alloy axle, between two outer discs. The two outer discs were attached to an arched hasp or shackle which is D-shaped in section and is 29.6 mm high. There are capital letters engraved or stamped on the rotating discs in addition to numbers and symbols. All of the letters seem to be intact on the surface of the rotating discs. From intact outer disc, running left to right, the symbols on each disc are: (1) R 0 3 P C; (2) E V S P; (3) ? G B F V A; (4) ? X D ? + N; (5) Q + L - M; (6) -----; (7) I - I S . The case has a diameter of 14.41 mm and is 18.74 mm long.
Its size and design make it likely that it was used to lock a casket. Weight 19.7 grams. The object has an even dark greenish-grey colour. For other similar PAS examples, cf. SUSS-E23432; LIN-80D373; SF8892; ESS-32C082.
