A cast copper-alloy and iron hollow Roman mount, of Silenus, a Bacchic companion. Probably dating to the 2nd century AD.
Description: The mount depicts a figurative bust, including chest, shoulders. The chest is bare while the neck is obscured by a curling beard and moustache, which also covers much of the face. The face has moulded eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth and high cheekbones. On the reverse, which is hollow, is a copper alloy projection 13.1mm in diameter from which the stump of an iron rivet extends. It extends 9.5 mm beyond the vertical line of the back of the head. T
