Copper alloy and glass, gilded, detached seal matrix setting. An oval intaglio of opaque white material of thickness 6.1mm - as exposed at its edge - which is glazed front and back with a bright blood red coating of glass. One side bears an incised curvilinear motif, probably a personal monogram. The other bears the incised design of a robed stooping figure advancing right, supported on an anchor; the latter feature identifies this as a personification of Death, or Thanatos, and may suggest this to be a memorial piece. The stone may have been reworked, as the bent back of the figure might equally be read as the 'angel' wings of a Classical Victory. The cutting on this figurative side is with fewer and broader strokes than that defining curvilinear script on the other. On neither side does cutting expose the underlying white stone or glass. An oval copper alloy frame retains traces of gilding, and some small apertures may relate to its attachment to a fob. It holds the stone tightly, but the latter is partially dislodged and so protrudes on the monogram side. The glass surface is pitted on both sides, and recent abrasion has brightened two patches on the figured side. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1750-1850.
