An incomplete Roman (AD 43-410, though probably 100-300 century in date due to the use of enamel) copper alloy stud with enamel decoration, with a small tear in the head of the stud and much of the enamel decoration missing. It stands 6.72mm tall an the head measures 18.94mm in diameter. The stud weighs 2.01g.
The circular head has a down-turned rim, which Crummy (1981, p.116) suggests would have provided an extra grip on the surface, presumably leather, into which they were set. At the centre is a circular area, deeper than the rest of the head, with traces of red enamel at its centre. Around are traces of a duller red, possibly orange. Around this is a narrow copper alloy wall, then between this and the rim a small square or blue enamel survives. Possibly this area was filled with alternating coloured enamel.
To the reverse projects a circular-sectioned shaft c.2.5mm in diameter, terminating in a flat foot 9.20mm in diameter.
