An incomplete cast copper alloy hinged head enamelled type brooch, of Early Roman dating (AD 50 to AD 100).
Approximately 50% of the brooch is present, consisting of the head, bow, and hinge. The foot, catch plate and pin are missing.
The head of the brooch consists of a cylindrial tube, with a slot present at the centre for the hinged pin to be located. Joining the head of the brooch to the bow is a series of recessed and raised ridges, the raised ridges have been rouletted. The front of the bow is decorated with a raised diamond (lozenge) shape. Around the edge of the central diamond, a recessed border is present, with a rouletted ridge. At the central of the diamond, four recessed cells for enamel are present, each with a red enamel inlay. The enamel cells are a foliate / leaf shape. The back of the brooch is plain and undecorated.
The brooch measures 28.85 mm in length, 21.49 mm wide and 11.90 mm thick. It weighs 6.5 grams.
The brooch is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.
Notes:
Comment from Sally Worrell (NFA Prehistoric & Roman Finds): It's not a Hod Hill but a late 1st-2nd C hinged head enamelled type. The oakleaf cells inlaid with red enamel are unusual but suggest that it's of Continental manufacture. There is a transverse ridge below the lozenge and the lower bow is missing but may originally have taken the form of a zoomoorphic terminal. A small quantity on early symmetrical brooches are known in Britain but are more common from sites in France, Germany, Switzerland and Pannonia with very few direct parallels known in this country. Examples of this brooch type show a vast range of decorative motifs and plates on the upper bow including lozengiform, rhomboidal, triangular, circular panels. Have a look at Bayley & Butcher 2004, 176-177.
