A lead-alloy cloth seal of post-Medieval date, possibly originating from the Low Countries.
The damaged seal comprises two sub-circular discs and a folded connecting strip. One disc bears a relief-stamped shield with a standing eagle on the left (dexter) and a key to the right (sinister). A ring and star are visible above and the number(s) '(7)-8' flank the shield. On the other disc is the number '78' within a sub-rectangular or shield-shaped border.
Dimensions: 26.7mm long, 18.4mm wide, 3.7mm thick. Weight: 6.03g.
Paul Cannon (pers. comm.) comments: 'I believe this cloth seal probably contains the arms of the Polish town of Rogozno. The arms consist of a demi-eagle and key. The arrangement of annulets and star at the top of the shield may be a stylised crown which occurs in the arms [see http://www.ngw.nl/int/pol/r/rogozno.htm ]. A further hint that this identification may be correct comes from a short history of Rogozno stating, "The town was one of the largest drapery centers in Greater Poland in the 18th century" [see http://www.sztetl.org.pl/en/article/rogozno/3,local-history/ ]. The numerals 7 & 8 either side of the shield (repeated on the other side of the seal) are I think indicating a date, perhaps 1678'.
