A cast lead spindle whorl. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, and with a central circular perforation. The upper surfaces have moulded decoration comprising a series of unevenly spaced diagonal ridges, possibly intended to be in pairs, and numbering at least seven in total. It measures 35.53mm in diameter, 12.88mm in height and weighs 82.22g.
Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. The relatively fine manufacture of this object including its decorative elements, and particularly the neatly drilled perforation, might indicate a Medieval to Post-Medieval date although an earlier date range cannot be ruled out entirely.
