RIVET

Unique ID: HAMP-9D4D72

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A complete medieval to post-medieval sheet copper-alloy rivet. The rivet is made from a kite-shaped piece of copper-alloy rolled into a cone. The top is flattened to form a head. The function for these objects is unclear. However, it is thought that they may have been used for repairing metal vessels.

Notes:

This object is generally corroded and has patches of a mid-green patina, particularly on the head.
A discussion of these rivets can be found in Egan 2005: 101. Egan suggests that these were a later form a rivet, which took over from the Medieval folded staples in the late 15th to the mid to late 16th century and continued in use into the 18th century (ibid.).
