A post-medieval Iron whittle tang knife or other tool with substantial bolster and copper-alloy handle decorated with enamel inlay. The handle, made in two halves, has two broad and convex faces and two narrow and flat. The hilt is angled and bears a worn moulded mask, probably representing a lion but also possibly a rounded human face. The symmetrical foliar decoration is in blue and white enamel, comprising petals in white enamel and leaves in blue enamel. The copper surface has been gilded. Broadly similar handles are recorded as NMS-2C8D44, NMS-454152 and NMS-1942E1. See also an example illustrated by Papin and Soulat (2017, 5; fig. 9, far right) dated by them to the first half of the 17th century. A further example is known from excavations in Staines (Crouch 1976, 122; no. 19); dated to the late 17th century it bears red, white and blue enamel.
