HARNESS MOUNT

Unique ID: CORN-9F5675

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Incomplete cast lead horse-harness boss with a central circular convex dome surrounded by a moulded flat flange around the edge. The dome is decorated with a central plain circle surounded by a concentric band and then six circles alternating with six trefoil petals to form a flower. The flower is bordered by another concentric band at thebase of the dome, beyond which are seven moulded leaves in relief, divided by eight impressed annulets. The boss might have been mounted on the leather blinker on a horse's bridle. Part of one of iron attachment loops remains on the back of the boss, but the area where almost half of the boss has been torn away may have held the other attachment loop, which was ripped off of the leather.

A similar example, YORYM-C073E6, has been recorded from Ryedale in North Yorkshire, and is dated to the 18th century, and another local example from Kenwyn can bee seen in CORN-66A852.

Read (1988) illustrates a similar example from Kingkerswell in Devon on page 180, No.1228, which is dated from the late 18th century to the 19th century.
