A probably incomplete and very worn Early Early-Medieval (400-600) copper alloy sword scabbard chape, broken across one projecting loop and probably missing another. In profile it is U-shaped with a globular projection from the base. One arm ends in a damaged loop, the other (shorter) in a worn trefoil. Measures 35.55x8.42x12.79mm and weighs 6.25g.

Both arms are D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the inside surface. The longer one tapers from the base (6.67x3.58mm wide) to the pierced and rounded end (3.50x0.91mm, piercing 1.16mm wide but a squashed a little and with broken edge). Roughly at the centre to one edge is a worn projection 5.28mm high broken across a c.6mm diameter piercing. To the other edge at this point is a rough projection (the rest of the edge either side is smooth).

The shorter arm is parallel-sided (6.46x2.77mm wide) expanding into a flat, worn and incomplete probable terminal, possibly trefoil in shape (8.42x1.96mm).

There are no signs of decoration on the object, although all patina has been lost and the metal is grey in colour.
