An incomplete Roman cast copper-alloy oval plate brooch (100-300 AD).

This brooch is pointed-oval in plan and has a central oval cell at the front. The edges of the cell are raised and it would have contained either a cameo or intaglio setting. However, none has survived. On the floor of the cell a buff deposit may be decayed adhesive. The rear face has the stubs of a pin lug and catch-plate at 12 o' clock and 6 o' clock. Traces of silvering can be seen on the rear face but none can be seen at the front.

This brooch is corroded to a green colour and is abraded overall. The pin is missing.

Height: 22.93mm; width: 16.10mm; thickness: 5.13mm. Weight: 2.59g.

Similar brooches have been published (Hattatt 1989: 364, fig. 223).
