TREASURE CASE 2012 T583: Incomplete Late Medieval silver-gilt badge in the form of a male boar. The boar is depicted in profile in a walking pose and facing left. Only the hind-quarters of the boar survive with the two hind-legs, tail and lower part of the back surviving. The bottom of the foremost back leg is broken and missing. Traces of gilding are present on the curl of the tail. The bristles, which run along the crest of the boar's back, are depicted via incised lines. The reverse of the badge is uneven and undecorated with a possible trace of solder for the pin fitting adjacent to the tail.

Dimensions: Length 9.45mm; Width 15.13mm; Thickness 1.63mm; Weight 0.6g

Discussion: The Boar was the livery badge of the household of Richard III. A more complete badge was found during the search for the Battle of Bosworth field which provides good evidence for the presence of a member of the king's personal household in the area. This badge is recorded on the database as LEIC-A6C834 (Treasure Case: 2009 T480). This item is more than 300 years old and composed of more than 10% precious metal, and therefore should be considered Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
